Thank you, Patti, I loved chatting with you. And congratulations on your award. No one deserves it more than you! Moses Sumney, Willy Chavarria, and photographer Laura Fuchs were in the middle of a three-way photoshoot yesterday as I walked into their room at The Standard hotel on the Highline. Sumney was posing on the bed, while taking shots of Chavarria photographing him on his knees, as Fuchs did her best to capture the moment while staying clear of the other two’s shots. They were there to get ready for the CFDA Awards; Chavarria was nominated for American Menswear Designer of the Year, and Sumney—the disarmingly stylish Ghanian-American artist—was the designer’s date for the ceremony. This was Chavarria’s first CFDA Award nomination, and it felt equal parts timely and overdue.
I think you were one of the first stylists to see fashion as existing beyond all the usual cities. You looked further. Yeah. I was doing a column for Italian Vogue and that’s when I really got into the mindset of, “Oh my God, look what they’re doing in Africa. Look what they’re doing in Copenhagen. Look what they’re doing wherever.” It’s so interesting. Something that just looks different and people want to go, “Where’d you get that? How’d you find this?” I love that. Giving them something new. Lastly, I’d love to ask, given you’re getting this award for all of the brilliant work you’ve done during your career: What’s the lesson you’ve learned, and what do you wish you’d known when you were starting out? I wish I would have gotten over doubt and fear sooner when I was starting out. I was so worried about what everyone thought of me and my work and eventually you just need to let go of all that and be yourself and do what feels natural. Craig McDean gave me that advice and it has stuck with me for years.
I’d love to see what you and Rafael would do together! How about designers? I remember being at London Fashion Week with you years ago, and we were sharing a car. I don’t think I’d ever met anyone who would go further, later, or deeper to find a new designer to work with. I was so impressed. Working with new designers is one of my favorite parts about styling. I have been doing this so long, so when you see someone doing something distinctive it sticks out. A lot of brands can look really similar after a while when they focus on trends, so I tend to lean into the ones that feel authentic to the overall vision of the artist. The ones putting work out that feels independent and fresh. I am currently loving pieces from Luis De Javier, Area, Act No.1, Duran Lantink, Luar, Puppets & Puppets, Collina Strada, Elena Velez, and Aziz Rebar.
