While 20 essentials may be the right number for me, perhaps seven (for each day of the week) or 30 (for each day of the month) is right for you. Take a look at the below list for inspiration about how to build your own collection of wardrobe essentials. Get ready to spend less time getting dressed, and more time enjoying life. In today’s edition of What I Wore This Week, Maleana Davis shares her past five days—which includes bucket hats and jewelry piled on. I love to be comfortable and wear a lot of color. Even though I spend most of my days in my apartment on Zoom, I still try to have fun with my look but keep it casual. Throughout this time working from home, I’ve definitely noticed I feel better when I actually get up earlier and spend more time getting ready before a day of virtual meetings. I’ve always gravitated towards lots of colors and prints. Even if I’m inside most of the day, I still try to keep my look true to me, so I still like to wear anything bright and fun.
The point is how to [channel] “the self at that time.” [I want to dress] sensuously everyday. I want [my style] to be an extension of my daily life at any time. I would say eccentric, over-the-top, a little bit ironic, and I always like to experiment with accessories. I love wearing a lot of jewelry and I also love wearing a lot of makeup. Not a lot of makeup, but makeup that matches the look, which I think is kind of unique. I don’t think that many people do that, but I just love going all out. I consider myself a collector, so I’ve worked really hard to find really unique pieces. I’m staring at my closet right now, and there’s everything from a cat shaped Loewe bag to older Miu Miu pieces. I’m absolutely obsessed with finding those pieces and collecting them, then integrating them into my wardrobe. Also, a lot about street style is finding out how to dress in a way that works for you personally and makes you feel comfortable. For me, I can’t wear stuff that I feel uncomfortable in because I feel like it shows. My biggest style icon is my mom, because she’s always encouraged me to be very experimental with my style and express myself. She’s in her 60s and she has bright yellow hair, so I think that says a lot.
I’m all about comfort in what I wear, so I’ll always choose a sneaker over a sandal or heel. Comfort is always the most important thing for me; what I wear at home, I’ll most likely wear if I’m going out. So here’s a glimpse into my comfortable but colorful week. Picture this: The year is 2003. Britney Spears’s masterful In the Zone is climbing the charts, social media has not yet taken over our lives, and Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie are taking over our TV screens on The Simple Life wearing Von Dutch trucker hats. These were simpler, sillier times! Sure, Y2K fashion gets a bad rap in general, and it may have been gaudy at times—remember when we wore huge belts with literally everything?—but it was earnest and less produced than the average celebrity ’fit you see today. More importantly, it was fun, which is what getting dressed should be all about right now. But don’t get too sentimental about fashion of the past—because in 2021, like it or not, early-2000s style is coming back with a vengeance.
