It is then that I perform spells, that I use herbs and stones and rocks and bones to literally change the world – to change a mind, to bring about coincidences and serendipity, to read the future and change my present accordingly, to heal, to hurt, to fight, to flee, to get what I need and what I want. Witchcraft is folk magic. It’s folk beliefs. It is the poor, the downtrodden, the depressed, the distressed, the displaced, the people who have no other option that turn to witchcraft. Witchcraft is difficult. It doesn’t always work. It often carries a social stigma, and is in many places still punishable by death. It often carries a price that is difficult to pay. If I had any other option, I would not choose witchcraft, much as I love it. It has been the same throughout history, and I wager that’s what’s happening now.
When it’s bad? When there’s something I want and I can’t seem to get it mundanely? THEN I practise witchcraft. When I’m out of money and the rent’s due, when I’m ill and there’s no cure or I can’t afford it, when I’m being abused or bullied, when I can’t find a suitable lover or partner, when I’m hungry, when I’m tired, when someone is attacking me, hurting me, oppressing me. When this happens to someone I know. When this happens to someone who could be me. When this happens to someone just because they’ve a different skin colour, gender, sexuality, ethnicity, whatever. When the trucks come bringing tools to destroy the Earth. When dickheads keep littering the grove of trees behind my house. When an injustice happens that I can’t help either because I can’t physically be of any use, or I can’t afford the money to donate, or this, or the other then I practice witchcraft.
I have certain beliefs according to my practice as a witch, and they may not be the same as many other people. The following statement is my belief, from my experience and historical research: I’m a witch. I believe in Spirits and magic ALL the time. I nod to the Tree Spirits as I pass the forest on my way to work. I cleanse my house every now and then. I occasionally do rituals to thank the Gods or Universe or whoever for my good fortune, and I sometimes talk to Spirits or Gods out of sheer curiosity and/or boredom due to there being nothing on TV anymore. This is my life when things are going good. Do I do spells? Do I practice witchcraft? No, not really. When my life is good, what would really be the point of going to all that effort? I keep things ticking over, I read a few books to further my understanding of witchcraft, sure, but I’m also as likely to spend an afternoon playing SimCity or some such. That’s my life when it’s good.
