But now that there a mRNA vaccines available, I CAN get the yearly flu shot – and have been for the last few years. So, to answer the question: yes, mRNA vaccines will be used for other illnesses in the future – in fact, they are being used for other illnesses right now. They’ve been at it for decades, it’s just that what with everyone throwing money at Covid-19 vaccines as if it was going out of fashion, they finally managed to get them out the door. Funding is usually the big issue in science, and when there’s already other approaches that are good enough, as with vaccines, not much goes into any improvements. The mRNA vaccines have two huge advantages: development is faster, which was proven here, and they are easier to modify for a new variety, which is going to be proven when the vaccines against the Omicron variety arrive at some time around Easter.
There is a lot of research being done on that so we can expect new vaccines and other medicine in the future. E.g. a HIV vaccine is expected in a few months from Moderna. The actual development of the Covid vaccine goes back to about 2013, based on work toward a SARS vaccine. When SARS (mostly) went away, there was less interest, but they kept working on it. BioNTech works on a Cancer vaccine (though this works different and is given after someone has Cancer already, but it also works by mRNA). BionTech already works iirc on a cancer-killing vax. This is not so much a classical vaccination, but a new treatment method, to be a supplement to – or supplemented by – the “conventional” methods. (As far as I can grasp it, the approach probably aims at “telling” the immune system the specific “signature” of the cancer the patient has developed – so it can kill it more effectively. Cancer is hellishly individual in this.)
There are reports on people already having started the work on several others. Some are true vaccinations, other treatment approaches. The targets are many – all those scourges that we still had not much success treating or preventing to spread. The mRNA approach should also allow us to protect lifestock from diseases that otherwise can kill millions upon millions of animals – like the “bird flu” viruses, “pig flu”, and many more. Yes. They are close to a common cold vaccine (they used this research as the base for the Covid-19 vaccine as both are Corona type viruses. It is a much more quicker and effective way to make vaccines and will most likely be mainstreamed in the future for all our vaccines. It’s more effective and safer than the other vaccine method as it takes a common DNA strand for multiple mutations of a virus and trains our bodies to recognize it, verses when you catch a cold or the flu or Covid-19 what part of the virus your body remembers is random, and therefore may not be shared with the mutations. It’s been almost a year since I sat in the class about it, so I don’t recall the exact Doctors/companies doing the research.
