So, to answer the question: yes, mRNA vaccines will be used for other illnesses in the future – in fact, they are being used for other illnesses right now. They’ve been at it for decades, it’s just that what with everyone throwing money at Covid-19 vaccines as if it was going out of fashion, they finally managed to get them out the door. Funding is usually the big issue in science, and when there’s already other approaches that are good enough, as with vaccines, not much goes into any improvements. The mRNA vaccines have two huge advantages: development is faster, which was proven here, and they are easier to modify for a new variety, which is going to be proven when the vaccines against the Omicron variety arrive at some time around Easter.
There is a lot of research being done on that so we can expect new vaccines and other medicine in the future. E.g. a HIV vaccine is expected in a few months from Moderna. The actual development of the Covid vaccine goes back to about 2013, based on work toward a SARS vaccine. When SARS (mostly) went away, there was less interest, but they kept working on it.
